Venia AI Fund
Backing Africa's AI-driven builders — after they've already proven someone will pay.

Venia AI Fund invests in early-stage African companies using artificial intelligence to scale faster, cheaper, or better than the alternative. We invest our own capital, in ventures that have already found paying customers — not in ideas, decks, or roadmaps.
AI changes the arithmetic of building in Africa.
Building a technology company in Africa has traditionally meant scaling the hard way — hiring large teams to compensate for thin infrastructure, fragmented payment rails, and markets that don't yet have the connective tissue more mature economies take for granted. That approach is slow and capital-intensive.
AI changes that arithmetic. It lets small teams do the work of large ones — automating customer support, underwriting, logistics routing, content, and more. The advantage this gives African founders who use it well is bigger than it is almost anywhere else, precisely because the old way of scaling is so much harder here.
We started Venia AI Fund to back the founders proving this out first — not with a thesis about where AI might go, but with capital for companies where it's already working.
Two routes to conviction.
Applied AI Businesses
Companies across fintech, healthcare, agriculture, logistics, commerce, and other core sectors that use AI as a structural advantage: lower costs, better retention, faster growth, or products that weren't previously possible to build.
Pure-Play AI Companies
Teams building genuinely differentiated AI infrastructure, tooling, or models with African relevance.
Evidence before narrative.
We don't require a minimum revenue number — we care more about your trajectory than your size today. A small, growing business with real AI-driven advantage is more interesting to us than a large, flat one.
A clear boundary, not a long exclusion list.
We don't invest in crypto or Web3-focused ventures, regardless of how AI is positioned within them. Outside of that, we evaluate opportunities case by case rather than working from a long exclusion list — if you're building something real with paying customers, we want to hear about it.
Built to move on proof.
We invest our own capital.
We're not raising from outside investors for this fund, which means no LP fundraising process standing between a strong company and a check — our decisions move as fast as our diligence does.
Evidence, not narrative.
Our screening bar exists because we've seen how easy it is to bolt “AI” onto a pitch without it changing the underlying economics of a business. We look past the label to what's actually happening in your numbers.
Built for founders who've already done the hardest part.
Finding your first paying customers is the hardest risk in any early-stage company. We're built to back founders who've cleared that bar, not to speculate on whether they will.
Capital first. Partnership after.
We aim to be a useful partner after we invest, not just a source of capital. That includes staying close to portfolio companies as they grow, and reserving follow-on capital for the strongest performers in the portfolio when they raise their next round.
Exact terms of any follow-on investment are assessed at the time, based on the company's progress and the round's terms.
A focused path from application to decision.

Initial review
We look at your traction, market, and team against our criteria above.
Diligence
If there's a fit, we verify your revenue and customer base, and dig into how AI contributes to your unit economics.
Decision
Investment decisions are made quickly relative to typical venture timelines — we're not raising from outside investors, so there's no fundraising process standing between a strong company and a check.
Beyond the check
We stay close to our portfolio companies and reserve follow-on capital for the strongest performers as they raise their next round.
What founders usually ask us.
Do you invest outside of Africa?
No. Our mandate is pan-African — we invest in companies operating in and built for African markets, wherever they're headquartered.
What if we're profitable but haven't raised any outside capital yet?
That's fine. We care about paying customers and growth trajectory, not your fundraising history.
Do you take a board seat?
This is assessed on a company-by-company basis depending on check size and round dynamics, not applied as a blanket policy.
What ownership stake do you take?
We don't work to a fixed ownership target — it's assessed deal by deal, based on valuation and round terms.
How long does a decision take?
Because we're deploying our own capital rather than raising from outside investors, we can typically move faster than a traditional fundraising process once diligence is complete.
We're pre-revenue but about to close paying customers — should we still apply?
We'd encourage you to apply once you have your first few months of real revenue. Reach out in the meantime if you'd like to stay on our radar.
Is there any cost to applying?
No. There's no fee to apply, and none to be considered for investment.
